Multi-brand diagnostics benefits

Extended Coverage

Eclipse diagnostic equipment has helped to raise profitability and increase the operational range of the mobile service vans by extending the range of diagnostic services that Mobile Auto Electrics can provide.

The Buckinghamshire-based vehicle repair specialist regularly provides diagnostic support to local customers with VOR issues, but now increasingly attends breakdown callouts for customers further afield - often in and around Central London or as far north as Northampton, in the East Midlands.

“Our customers know we have the capability to diagnose problems on any vehicle in their fleet. They know they can trust us to be able to rectify them, wherever they are.”

says Director Richard Harnett

Permanent Repair

Any bus and coach engineer who has ever had to trace a recurring auto electrical problem will recognise the potential for an expensive repair.

The first time an ABS-related problem affected two Volvo B12M coaches belonging to London-based coach and bus operator Impact Group, the dealership charges for labour on what amounted to a temporary repair came to over £900.

The problems recurred a year later, but with an Eclipse Testpad of its own to call on this time, Impact's downtime was kept to a minimum as wiring problems were identified and resolved permanently, in-house. Both vehicles were soon back on the road.

“We have more control over workshop costs and also more control over parts expenditure because unnecessary parts are less likely to be fitted.”

says Managing Director Tony Hill

Profitable Investment

When Chris Penn set about improving the profitability of Silverstone based Burcote Garage, investment in new diagnostic equipment was seen as essential - ease of use vital.

After trialling an Eclipse Testpod he was sure it was just the right piece of diagnostic kit to do the trick:

“We see a lot of VW, Audi and Mercedes vehicles,” he says. “This new kit gives us the ability to work on all of those models and the options to work on more besides.”

He had the option of additional training but didn't need any.

“The Eclipse Testpod Pro is that easy to use. We were fully operational before the end of the first day.”

Operator Benefits

Fleet workshop managers like Dan Ball at building products distribution specialist DJ Ball are taking the diagnostic route to workshop efficiency.

Its fleet of 10 trucks and 15 trailers are serviced and repaired at the company's own workshop in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. The diagnostic support provided by the Eclipse Testpad has contributed directly to savings on:

  • driver time on trips to dealerships
  • overall maintenance costs
  • vehicle downtime
  • cost of unnecessary replacement parts
  • fuel consumption

“Workshop efficiency levels have risen, producing real opportunities to add revenue from external repair work.”

says Dan Ball

Mobile Opportunities

Mobile auto electrical businesses are among the specialist users building business opportunities with the help of the Eclipse Testpad.

Plymouth-based Automotive Electrical has extended its service area and increased the number of diagnostic work referrals from national vehicle recovery clubs. Proprietor Dave Hodge says workshop customers are also experiencing significant benefits thanks to services provided:

“At least one of our customers has held on to a large vehicle maintenance contract as a direct result of the diagnostic services that we are able to provide for them using the Eclipse Testpad”

says Dave Hodge

Counciling Service

A shrewd investment has enabled Birmingham City Council to cut downtime, increase fleet utilisation and reduce workshop operating costs at its largest vehicle maintenance unit.

With a mixed fleet of over 1400 specialist vehicles to look after, managers at Birmingham City Council's Montague Street depot are aware that every vehicle off the road not only compromises service levels, but is likely to incur a hefty hire charge if cover is required.

“Light vans, minibuses for the disabled and even larger coaches are now more easily repaired under one roof with the help of the same Eclipse TestPad that we use on the street cleaners and refuse collection vehicles.”

says workshop supervisor Nick Eacock
